The 10 Best Vertical Mice of 2022 for Wrist Comfort & Support

Douglas Engelbart invented the modern computer mouse over 50 years ago, way back in the early 1960s. In the decades since, computers have evolved from machines the size of a room to portable screens that follow you everywhere. Yet, our mice retain the same basic shells, simple buttons, and dangling cords as outlined in a half-century-old patent.

We’re well into the 21st century now, and it’s about time we replaced the traditional mouse with something more ergonomic — something like the best vertical mouse. In contrast to their traditional counterparts, vertical mice suspend your hand in a neutral, handshake-like position for better comfort and support. Although the data is inconclusive, many promising studies indicate that this posture also reduces the risk of injury and muscle fatigue at work.

If you’re ready to make the leap to a new-and-improved peripheral — or if you want to learn more about their unique designs — join me as we go through this list of today’s most ergonomic mice.

How We Evaluated These Vertical Mice

We don’t take your health lightly at SitWorkPlay. That’s why I began this guide with a deep dive into scientific studies on vertical mice and their potential benefits. I used these findings to analyze today’s most popular models, physically testing them when possible and comparing my opinions against online user reviews to ensure accuracy.

Here are the key criteria I used to determine which vertical mice made the cut:

1. Ergonomics – Your health comes first, which is why I began by judging each mouse’s supportiveness, ensuring appropriate vertical angles (45° to 65°) that suspend your hand and wrist in a handshake-like resting position.

2. Comfort – Although you’ll undoubtedly experience some discomfort when adjusting to a new peripheral, your vertical mouse should quickly feel second nature, with a size and surface material that accommodates your grip.

3. Performance – Depending on the model, vertical mice come with either optical or laser sensors. While there are pros and cons to each, every sensor should provide excellent accuracy across various desktop surfaces.

4. Features – Vertical mice can come with wireless connectivity, extra buttons, and even RGB lighting. I always prioritize innovative and practical features, as long as they don’t negatively impact support.

5. Budget – The team at SitWorkPlay always wants to showcase the best deals. That’s why I’ve curated the top options in every price range, starting at just $20.

With these criteria in mind, I reduced my starting list from over 30 to just ten. You can rest assured that the following options offer the greatest ergonomic benefits and overall performance among today’s vertical mice.

Learn more about the MX Vertical from Logitech at these online retailers.

Luxurious isn’t a word I usually associate with computer mice. But that’s the only way to describe Logitech’s MX Vertical. This mouse’s stunning black and silver design features a harmonious blend of angles and contours for optimal hand and finger placement. Meanwhile, the primary 57° vertical angle guides your wrist into a neutral handshake position, ensuring exceptional comfort and noticeably reduced fatigue.

Regarding performance, the MX accommodates anywhere from 400 to 4,000 DPI and offers a 125 Hz polling rate. Through my research, I’ve deduced that the MX Vertical responds within about 20ms from initial click when connected via Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz receiver — not bad by any means. If you opt to plug it in via USB-C, you can achieve closer to 10ms, making the MX Vertical suitable for work and gaming activities.

My least favorite part about the MX Vertical is its Logitech Flow functionality (a proprietary feature that lets you swap between devices on the fly). That’s a shame, because I honestly love how beneficial swapping devices can be when working with a desktop and laptop or tablet. Unfortunately, the button to swap between devices is located underneath the mouse, meaning you have to turn it over and press it manually each time. It’s poor implementation in an otherwise outstanding product.

Pros

  • Noticeably reduces fatigue and discomfort
  • 240 mAh battery with USB-C charging cable provide roughly three months of battery life at a time
  • Connect via Logitech’s unifying receiver or Bluetooth for access to computers and port-free devices like iPad

Cons

  • Logitech Flow’s Easy-Switch button is on the bottom, inaccessible without flipping over the mouse
  • Comes with a mushy-feeling scroll wheel

Best Budget Vertical Mouse: Anker Vertical Wireless

  • Maximum DPI: 1,600
  • Connectivity: Wireless
  • Buttons: 6
  • Weight: 95 grams
  • Best for: Smaller budgets
  • Warranty: 18 Months
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Ergonomic grip keeps your wrist in a handshake position
  • Features forwards/backwards buttons for Windows users
  • Smooth optical tracking sensor comes with adjustable DPI, 800 to 1,600

Learn more about the Vertical Wireless from Anker at these online retailers.

I’m always telling people that you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve ergonomics. The Anker Vertical Wireless is an excellent example. Yes, the sub-$30 price tag means you’ll need to make a few sacrifices — the latency is on the high side, and this mouse drains AA batteries faster than a blood-sucking leech. But its angular shape feels wonderful on your hands and wrists, and it even has a few unique tricks up its sleeve.

Among the more notable features, you’ll find two Windows-oriented thumb buttons and an adjustable DPI button that swaps from 800 to 1,600. The optical sensor also tracks surprisingly well, with great accuracy, and the entire mouse weighs in at just 95 grams (without the batteries, of course). Anker even incorporates a Power Saving Mode that kicks in after eight minutes of inactivity, preserving the notoriously awful battery life.

Pros

  • Exceptionally affordable, often on sale for under $20
  • USB receiver fits into a slot under the mouse, ensuring easy storage and transport
  • Power Saving Mode kicks in after eight minutes of inactivity, preserving precious battery life

Cons

  • Requires two AA batteries; the short battery life averages around two months
  • Lackluster 35ms latency thanks to the 125 Hz polling rate and substandard wireless receiver

Best Premium Vertical Mouse: Evoluent VerticalMouse D

At A Glance
  • Price: $114.95
  • Maximum DPI: 2,600
  • Connectivity: Wireless
  • Buttons: 7
  • Weight: 142 grams
  • Best for: Best-in-class ergonomics
  • Warranty: 2 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Varies
Highlights
  • Ergonomic design; comes with a contoured thumb pad and extended pinky rest
  • Adjust the Laser sensor’s DPI and keep track of movement via built-in LED indicators
  • Smart Scrolling adapts based on how fast you roll the mouse wheel

Learn more about the VerticalMouse D from Evoluent at these online retailers.

Evoluent is the original vertical mouse manufacturer, with a history that goes back 25 years. Although the company has improved upon its formula over the years, the VerticalMouse D retains its predecessor’s overall shape, keeping your wrist posture healthy and fatigue-free.

But the VerticalMouse D goes far beyond the basics, integrating several exciting new features. Among them, you’ll find a laser sensor with an adjustable DPI, Smart Scrolling that adjusts cursor speed based on how fast you move the wheel, and even software integration for enhanced programmability. To fit all this functionality, the mouse’s R&D team did have to incorporate a giant shell around 4″ wide. But the VerticalMouse D remains extraordinarily comfortable, with a thumb ledge and pinky support that rests underneath the main pointer buttons.

Pros

  • Requires a single AA battery that lasts around three months on average
  • The sleek, metallic-looking design comes in three sizes to support various grips
  • Magnetic bottom cover snaps on and off, keeping the swappable battery and USB receiver safe yet accessible

Cons

  • Lacks Bluetooth support; USB receiver required
  • At roughly 4″ in diameter, VerticalMouse is one of the bulkiest mice around

Best Vertical Gaming Mouse: ZLOT Vertical

At A Glance
  • Price: $26.99
  • Maximum DPI: 10,000
  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Buttons: 7
  • Weight: 170 grams
  • Best for: Gaming
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • LED strip provides a lovely pop of color
  • Features seven buttons and a WASD analog stick
  • Pixart PMW3325 sensor tracks well on non-glass surfaces

Learn more about the Vertical from ZLOT at these online retailers.

The ZLOT Vertical is undoubtedly the coolest mouse on this list. It’s not only LED-enabled, but it comes with a built-in joystick. While these features are more flash than function, the ZLOT remains the best gaming-oriented vertical mouse on the market.

Before I gush about its in-game performance, let me explain the joystick. It’s not like your average controller joystick, as there’s no diagonal movement. It’s more like a mini keypad, as the four axes (up, down, left, right) correspond to keys on your keyboard. What’s more, you need to extend the joystick to the edge before it actuates, making it unsuitable for 3D directional movement. Even still, it has its uses. You can bind it to arrow keys for 2D games like Littlewood by Sean Young. Or, you can use it as a media control while web surfing or watching shows.

Performance-wise, the ZLOT is quite snappy, with a maximum 10,000 DPI and a 1,000 Hz polling rate that reports movement to your PC every 1ms. It even incorporates a Pixart PMW3325 sensor, an incredible deal given the $27 price tag.

Pros

  • Soft, comfy grip keeps you in the game for hours
  • Comes with five DPI settings, starting at 1,500 and going up to 10,000
  • 1,000 Hz maximum polling rate feels snappy and responsive

Cons

  • Some users have issues with the Zelotes customization software
  • Joystick functions like four WASD keys and does not support controller-oriented games

Best Vertical Mouse for Newbies: Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse

At A Glance
  • Price: $46.67
  • Maximum DPI: 1,000
  • Connectivity: Wireless
  • Buttons: 4
  • Weight: 100 grams
  • Best for: Transitioning to vertical mice
  • Warranty: 1 Year
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Ergonomic shape offers a large ledge for your thumb
  • Microsoft BlueTrack ensures excellent tracking on every surface
  • Windows button opens the Start Menu with a single click

Learn more about the Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse from Microsoft at these online retailers.

The first time I used the Microsoft Sculpt, I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was. The left-side ledge holds your thumb in position, while the smooth right-side buttons support the rest of your fingers atop a gentle curve. Unlike more traditional vertical mice with sharper angles, you can even start using it without the frustrating learning curve, and it still maintains better support than more conventional options.

The Sculpt also incorporates Microsoft’s BlueTrack technology and a zippy 15ms response for responsive work or even play. The main downside is that you can’t adjust the polling rate, and the DPI caps out at an underwhelming 1,000 rate. What’s more, you can’t use the mouse’s convenient Windows Start button on Macs — not a huge loss, but important to note if you like to squeeze every ounce of functionality out of your peripherals.

Pros

  • 125 Hz polling rate offers a surprisingly solid ~15ms response time
  • Feels sturdy yet lightweight enough to move around your desk with ease
  • Design blends elements of regular and vertical mice for an easy transition to the real deal

Cons

  • Features a non-adjustable 125 Hz polling rate
  • Some of the features and software unavailable to Mac users

Best Vertical Mouse for Small Hands: City Ergonomics DXT2 Wireless

At A Glance
  • Price: $99
  • Maximum DPI: 2,000
  • Connectivity: Wireless
  • Buttons: 3
  • Weight: 105 grams
  • Best for: Small hands, travel
  • Warranty: 2 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Connects to your PC via convenient RF dongle
  • Pencil-like grip and 50-gram click force ensure loose, natural mousing
  • Symmetric design works perfectly for righties and lefties

Learn more about the DXT2 Wireless from City Ergonomics at these online retailers.

A big issue with standard vertical mice is that they’re pretty bulky. That’s why the folks at City Ergonomics created the DXT2 Wireless, an exceptional vertical mouse that fits every size hand, without exception. It even supports ambidextrous users, with a symmetrical design that suits righties and lefties alike.

Even though DXT2 is slim and easily accessible by everybody, I will admit that the design is a little taller than it needs to be — nearly 4″ high. This height strikes me as unnecessary, considering how you’re supposed to grip the mouse like a miniature pen, using only three fingers. Fortunately, the taller design doesn’t hinder much in the way of ergonomics. In fact, the DXT2 is quite comfortable, supporting a gentle grip that moves like a calligraphy pen sweeping across the page. Connect it to your machine using the RF dongle accessory, and enjoy up to two weeks of action on a single charge.

Pros

  • Incredibly lightweight (105 grams) for a vertical mouse
  • Quite comfortable, like a natural extension of your hands
  • Tiny yet powerful lithium-ion battery lasts two weeks on a full charge

Cons

  • The 4″ shell height feels a little tall
  • No battery indicator; mouse dies without warning

Best Classic Vertical Mouse: Evoluent VerticalMouse 4

At A Glance
  • Price: $109.95
  • Maximum DPI: 2,600
  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Buttons: 6
  • Weight: 198 grams
  • Best for: Classic vertical mousing
  • Warranty: 2 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Varies
Highlights
  • Supports your arm in a neutral position
  • Adjustable DPI switch comes with easy-to-read indicator lights
  • Large mouse base provides a sturdy foundation for your hand

Learn more about the VerticalMouse 4 from Evoluent at these online retailers.

The Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 is a classic. It builds upon the original vertical mouse released way back in the early 2000s, offering additional buttons and several enhancements. Of all these new updates, I particularly appreciate its wireless capabilities, which untethers you from the desk for effortless movement.

Like its predecessors before it, the VerticalMouse 4 remains one of the most ergonomic mice around, its large shell and contoured buttons ensuring a stable foundation for your workplace activities. However, I probably wouldn’t recommend it for gaming, as it’s known to suffer from occasionally sporadic cursor movement. While I haven’t encountered any accuracy issues personally, it’s a significant topic of concern among Evoluent’s userbase. The mouse is also very heavy, and it doesn’t support the snappy movement necessary for today’s fast-paced titles.

Despite that, I find its frame more of a pro than a con. The 3.5″ x 5.5″ form factor is exceptionally comfortable, like a king-size mattress with plenty of room to spread out and relax.

Pros

  • Generous 3.5″ x 5.5″ shell lest you spread your hand out
  • Comes in different sizes and even supports lefties
  • Buttons feature contours that hug your fingers for a steady grip

Cons

  • Some users find that the optical sensor jumps around, lacks accuracy
  • Noticeably dated website and software UI feels clunky and challenging to use

  • Kensington’s optical sensor reads the Trackball’s movement on every axis

Learn more about the Pro Fit® Ergo Vertical from Kensington at these online retailers.

Although trackballs aren’t very common nowadays, many users still swear by their ergonomics and precision tracking. For total transparency, I am not one of those users — but I can still recognize good performance when I see it.

The Kensington Pro Fit® Ergo Vertical incorporates an ergonomic 60° grip angle alongside Kensington’s Trackball technology. This unique design combines two of the most ergonomic mouse upgrades into one unit, creating a comfort- and support-oriented powerhouse. Connect the Pro Fit® to your computer via Bluetooth (I don’t recommend the receiver, as it’s not nearly as accurate), and enjoy wrist support like never before.

Despite a few hiccups now and then, I find the optical sensor is quite reliable. It also pairs well with the Pro Fit’s nine programmable buttons — customizable via KensingtonWorks™ software — for precision ergonomics.

Pros

  • Excellent battery life; AA batteries last up to a year and a half
  • Exceptionally comfortable thanks to the ergonomic grip and fine-tuned 60° angle
  • KensingtonWorks™ software offers fine-tune control over all nine programmable buttons

Cons

  • The scroll wheel can act sporadically at times, jumping around pages
  • Many users report issues with the USB receiver, recommend Bluetooth instead

  • Connects via Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz frequency
  • Ergonomic glove-like shape keeps your hand in a neutral posture
  • Adjust the DPI from 1,000 to 2,400 with just a few clicks

Learn more about the MV045 from Jelly Comb at these online retailers.

You may have heard about Amazon recently removing several prominent companies from its site due to review fraud (essentially, offering a future discount or free product in exchange for reviews). Unfortunately, Jelly Comb was one of those companies, and you’ll no longer find its products on Amazon.

But that doesn’t mean you should count them out. Slightly shady dealings aside, I’ve used several Jelly Comb products in the past and have never had an issue. The Jelly Comb MV045 is a genuinely innovative and properly supportive product that can improve your working ergonomics. The glove-like shape embraces your hand for excellent comfort, and the thumb mouse buttons offer easy browsing shortcuts. The MB045 is also super simple to use, connectable via Bluetooth or a handy USB dongle, and powered by a single AA battery.

While I understand any hesitation, I still highly recommend giving Jelly Comb a shot, especially considering the reliable 1-year warranty.

Pros

  • One AA battery powers the entire unit
  • Soothing, silent buttons ensure a quiet working environment
  • Unique design, with a midnight black or Apple-inspired white and silver color scheme

Cons

  • Company caught up in a reward-for-review scheme
  • Some users find the mouse slippery, despite its ribbed grip

Highlights
  • Cork siding with dimpled thumb rest offers a comfy, supportive grip
  • Lenovo’s IR sensor tracks well across most desktop surfaces
  • Programmable thumb buttons let you bind custom commands using Lenovo’s Go Central software

Learn more about the Go Wireless Vertical Mouse from Lenovo at these online retailers.

Lenovo is primarily known for its mid-range laptops and computers. So color me surprised to find the company manufacturing an affordable vertical mouse as ergonomic as the Go Wireless.

The defining feature of the Lenovo Go is definitely its cork siding. I’ve never seen cork used in a mouse before, but it’s a brilliant idea, combining the material’s affordability, durability, and grippable texture into a one-of-a-kind peripheral. The cork also removes a lot of the weight associated with vertical mice. The Lenogo Go is just 96 grams without its AA battery and roughly 119 grams when wholly assembled. I’ve also found that the Lenovo Go performs exceptionally well on most surfaces, the IR sensor tracking like a champ.

My primary complaint with the Lenovo Go is the bulbous design. In the mouse’s next iteration, I’d like to see a slimmer back-end with slightly more curvature.

Pros

  • Single AA battery lasts up to 12 months
  • Extraordinarily lightweight for a vertical mouse; snappy and easy to move around your desk
  • 45° vertical angle feels great for vertical mouse beginners, as it’s not as steep as competing models

Cons

  • Software only supports Windows systems
  • Bulbous backside feels a little too large
