Best Big & Tall Office Chairs

The 10 Best Big & Tall Office Chairs for Every Body in 2022

It’s hard to fit in when you’re big and tall. When everything from clothes to office furniture is made for smaller people, you never get to experience the comfort and support that everyone else takes for granted. But there is some good news. Alongside recent trends in body positivity, companies are forging ahead with more adaptable products explicitly geared towards the larger crowd. Now, instead of fitting in, you can stand out by sitting in a quality office chair designed for you and your unique body type.

The models in this lineup of best big & tall office chairs all come from renowned brands known for their ergonomic, cushiony seats. What’s more, they all feature extra-wide and extra-tall designs, easily accommodating users above 350 pounds (one option even reaches towards 1,000 pounds). Sitting doesn’t have to feel like a hassle anymore; instead, you can work in personalized comfort, enjoying the productivity boost and quality of life that comes along with it.

How We Evaluated These Big & Tall Office Chairs

SitWorkPlay is all about providing a thorough, honest review of today’s best office gear. As such, I closely inspected today’s most popular big & tall office chairs, researching their strengths and weaknesses and even physically testing them when appropriate. I also compared my findings against real user reviews, ensuring an aggregate viewpoint that accurately reflects overall performance.

With that in mind, here are the criteria I used to eliminate all but the top-performing options:

1. Accommodation – Despite their “big & tall” categorization, oversized office chairs vary widely in height and weight capacity. Since the best office chair is one that fits your body like a glove, I searched for models that accommodate a range of users, up to 6’9″ tall and 800 pounds.

2. Ergonomics – Back in the day, big & tall chairs lacked the adjustability of their standard counterparts, even though ergonomic adaptability is even more critical for bigger users. Nowadays, you can be more selective, which is why I only considered chairs that feature — at a minimum — height, tilt, and swivel mechanisms.

3. Comfort – I inspected various big & tall office chairs, only moving forward with mid-back and executive models with thick cushions and/or flexible mesh for premium comfort.

4. Durability – Just because a chair supports big & tall individuals doesn’t mean it provides a sturdy foundation over the long term. I closely analyzed each model’s materials, selecting options with robust metal or nylon components and stretch-resistant fabrics, preferably backed by a long-term (even lifetime) warranty.

5. Price – Due to their extra materials and more robust build quality, big & tall chairs often cost double, even triple the standard fare. The team at SitWorkPlay wants you to find a supportive option no matter your budget, which is why I only showcase the most feature-rich chairs in every price range.

As you can see, our process is quite comprehensive. You can rest assured that the following list provides the most accurate showing of today’s greatest big & tall chairs.

  • Height: 42.5 inches
  • Weight: 66 lbs
  • Best for: Most big & tall users
  • Available Colors: 5 color options
  • Warranty: Lifetime

Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 500 pounds; features a 22.75″ seat and 3.75″ of height adjustability
  • LiveBack® system changes shape, flexing with your spine as you move
  • Natural Glide System™ propels your pelvis forward as you lean back, providing excellent postural support

If you’ve read any of SitWorkPlay’s previous writing on office chairs, you know that the Steelcase Leap is one of our favorite models due to its ergonomic performance and overall build quality. The Steelcase Leap Plus follows suit, offering the same comfort and attention to detail as its little brother while incorporating an 18% larger seat base and a 12% larger backrest.

Aside from the bigger design, my favorite feature on the Leap Plus is the LiveBack® system, a proprietary backrest that changes shape as you sit, flexing to match your posture and position. When testing it out, I found that it feels less like a backrest and more like an article of clothing that moves in unison with your body. When combined with the seat’s posture-enhancing Natural Glide System™, the entire chair practically bends to your will as you set about your workday.

The major downside to the Leap Plus is its price, which comes in well over $1,500. But considering its overall support for big & tall users, it’s a worthy investment backed by a lifetime warranty.

Pros

  • 4D armrests move in four directions
  • Adjustable seat depth lets you lock in your seat position for optimal positioning
  • Foam cushions maintain supportiveness, providing excellent comfort over the long term

Cons

  • Shorter seat adjustment making the Leap Plus less ideal for users over 6’4″
  • Mid-back design doesn’t support head; add-on headrest costs hundreds of dollars more

Best Big & Tall Mesh Office Chair: Herman Miller Aeron (Type C)

At A Glance
  • Price: 1,445
  • Height: 43 inches
  • Weight: 43 lbs
  • Best for: Breathability, flexible suspension
  • Available Colors: Black, Graphite, Mineral
  • Warranty: 12 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 350 pounds; offers a 22.3″ seat and 5.3″ of height adjustability
  • Harmonic Tilt technology automatically adjusts the seat and backrest based on your positioning and center of gravity
  • positioning and center of gravity Breathable pellicle fabric lets air and heat pass through, providing temperature maintenance even in hotter weather

You probably know the Herman Miller Aeron as a standard office chair. But it actually comes in three sizes: A, B, and C. The last among them — Size C — is specially designed to support big & tall individuals.

One of the things that makes Aeron so ideal for bigger users is its pellicle suspension, a novel seat design that’s taut and stretch-resistant, keeping users up to 350 pounds adequately supported and ergonomically aligned. While I personally find the mesh a bit too stiff, most of Aeron’s seven million users sing its praises. Besides, I must admit that the mesh finish is exceptionally durable and provides excellent airflow, ensuring your whole body stays well-supported and cool throughout the warm summer months.

While you can purchase a ready-to-ship Aeron with a standard array of mechanisms, this is one of the rare instances where I recommend building it à la carte. You can get started by heading to the official Herman Miller website and going through the build-your-own process. Just be prepared, as the final result may leave you with a bit of sticker shock.

Pros

  • Armrests offer height, depth, and angle movement
  • PostureFit SL pads provide additional stabilizing support to the lower back
  • Customization process lets you configure your own Aeron chair

Cons

  • Lacks width-adjustable armrests
  • One of the more expensive options, and it caps out at 350 pounds

Best Durable Big & Tall Office Chair: Triton® Max

At A Glance
  • Price: 819
  • Height: 42 inches
  • Weight: 64 lbs
  • Best for: Overall durability
  • Available Colors: 15 Color Options
  • Warranty: 15 Years
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 500 pounds; offers a 23″ seat and 5.25″ of height adjustability
  • Sturdy craftsmanship incorporates thick sheet metal construction with 16-gauge steel framing and a 29″ aluminum base
  • Pressure-reducing waterfall seat offers 3.25″ of dense, cushy foam for day-long comfort

Unlike most office chairs, the Triton® Max isn’t available from the manufacturer. Instead, you have to purchase this specialized model from a dedicated distributor and have it custom-built to your specifications. But the extra steps are well worth the effort, as the Triton® Max accommodates users up to 500 pounds and comes with a generous, extra-wide 23″ seat roomier than a Hilton penthouse suite. The Triton also comes with all the high-class amenities you’d expect, including four to seven ergonomic adjustment points (depending on the mechanism you select) and articulating armrests that are supremely width- and height-adjustable.

If you currently worry about whether your chair will hold you, Triton® eliminates that fear once and for all. It’s far and away the most durable office chair I’ve ever reviewed, with a 29″ aluminum base, 16″ gauge steel framing, and robust sheet metal at the core of the seat and backrest.

Pros

  • Made to order to your exact specifications
  • Features variable adjustment mechanisms that affect height, tilt, recline, and more
  • Articulating armrests move in four directions, including width

Cons

  • Challenging to find at regular retailers
  • Every upgrade adds hundreds to the final purchase price

Best Budget Big & Tall Office Chair: HON Wave

At A Glance
  • Price: $329
  • Height: 42.9 inches
  • Weight: 59 lbs
  • Best for: Users on a ~$300 budget
  • Available Colors: Black
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 450 pounds; offers a 22″ seat and 4″ of height adjustability
  • Layered mesh fabric provides extra durability without sacrificing airflow
  • Tilt and tilt tension mechanisms provide precision control over the chair’s motion

If you dig the breathability of the Herman Miller Aeron but want something a little more affordable — and heavier-duty, to boot — the HON Wave is an excellent alternative. This chair incorporates several layers of thick, flexible mesh that accommodate users up to 450 pounds without issue. While the backrest’s airflow is nice, the built-in lumbar support is the true star. It may not be as cushy as some other models, but it does apply just enough pressure to support your lower back and keep your vertebrae from crashing down like a tsunami.

In terms of ergonomics, the HON Wave gets a solid B. It’s not the most adaptable model around, but it does incorporate height, tilt, and swivel mechanisms that provide a bit of wiggle room. It also comes with 2-directional armrests that move on the X and Y axis. The only downside is how little height-adjustability they have to offer.

Pros

  • Height-adjustable lumbar support offers ideal pressure
  • 2D armrests provide height and width adjustments
  • All-black aesthetic looks excellent in any home office

Cons

  • No headrest option
  • Maximum armrest height feels too low for users far above 6′

Best Big & Tall Office Chair for Gaming: Secretlab Titan EVO (XL)

At A Glance
  • Price: $549
  • Height: 6.9 inches
  • Weight: 82.7 lbs
  • Best for: Gaming, full back support
  • Available Colors: 28 color options
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 49 Days
  • Shipping: $29
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 395 pounds; features a 22.8″ seat and 3.7″ of height adjustability
  • L-ADAPT™ lumbar system flexes with your spine, providing exceptional lower back support
  • 165° reclining backrest supports your entire body in every position

Secretlab has long dominated the gaming chair industry, providing sleek chairs with quality components — all at a competitive price. Now, the company is upping the ante once again with its new TITAN Evo XL series, a big & tall line capable of supporting eSports superstars and NBA players alike. The chair is so durable that it accommodates users up to 6’9″ and 395 pounds, its executive backrest rising to the challenge and keeping you upright (or reclined down to 165°) for hours at a time. Meanwhile, the Secretlab’s Pebble Seat and L-ADAPT Lumbar system keep you feeling snug and cozy, while the armrests prop you up in every position, their pivoting mechanisms conjuring images of Stephen Curry on the court.

While most big & tall chairs sacrifice style to make way for bigger components, the TITAN maintains its fierce, executive aesthetic. The only downside to prioritizing aesthetics is that the seat’s racing-style flared edges bring the seat width closer to 19″ than the full 22.8″.

Pros

  • 4D armrests move on four separate plains
  • Sturdy ADC12 aluminum base provides a sturdy foundation
  • Leatherette- or SoftWeave™-wrapped Pebble Seat feels excellent on your posterior

Cons

  • Seat width is closer to 19″ with flared edges
  • Relatively thin (and firm) cushioning compared to other big & tall chairs

Best Big & Tall Office Chair for Overall Comfort: Serta Executive

At A Glance
  • Price: $251.99
  • Height: 48.25 inches
  • Weight: 46.3 lbs
  • Best for: Overall comfort, casual office work
  • Available Colors: Black
  • Warranty: 1 Year
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 350 pounds; features a 22″ seat and 3.75″ of height adjustability
  • Incorporates 3″ of comfy Serta foam covered by sleek bonded leather
  • Tilt mechanism reclines up to 22°

Finding comfort as a big & tall individual is a serious plight. At least, it was until Serta released its Executive office chair. Built exclusively for larger folks, the Executive features 3″ of cloudy Serta cushioning atop every contact point, ensuring plenty of support that compresses like a dream. Sit down and lean back, and enjoy a plush headrest and contouring lumbar pillow that feels like an injection of dopamine in all your sore spots.

When you’re ready to switch positions, simply reach over the padded, leatherette-wrapped armrests, and you’ll find a height and tilt mechanism that lets you drop down 22° degrees for laid-back relaxation or casual office work — whichever you prefer.

Aside from the non-adjustable armrests (always a let-down in the office chair world), I dislike that the chair doesn’t work as well for users under 6′ tall. If you’re more big than tall, you may want to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Smooth-rolling casters move easily atop hardwood and carpet surfaces
  • Contoured shape provides excellent lumbar and headrest support
  • Executive design provides an imposing aesthetic that’s luxurious and sophisticated

Cons

  • Bonded leather cracks over time
  • Lacks adaptability to support users much above 6′ tall

Best Big & Tall Office Chair for Seat Comfort: Sadie Big & Tall

At A Glance
  • Price: $516
  • Height: 42.91 inches
  • Weight: 44 lbs
  • Best for: Seat comfort
  • Available Colors: Black
  • Warranty: 3 Years
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 350 pounds; features a 22″ seat and 3.75″ of height adjustability
  • Mesh backrest provides excellent airflow and comes with built-in lumbar support
  • Thick and extra-wide 6″ foam seat offers exceptional comfort and maintains firmness over the chair’s lifetime

When I dream about using a new big & tall office chair, my fantasy starts with the seat itself. After all, the seat makes up the heart of your experience, providing a weight-absorbing foundation for your tailbone and upper body. The folks at Sadie understand the seat’s importance and equip their Big & Tall with roughly 6″ of premium cushioning that keeps you afloat in pure cozy bliss. Then, they double down on the concept, providing extra-thick PU-clad armrests to ensure that every weight-bearing contact point remains padded and ready for action.

While the comfy seat is Sadie’s primary selling point, this chair also features a breathable mesh backrest with respectable lumbar padding. While I wish the armrests featured more adaptability for wider individuals, the 22″ armrest-to-armrest basin should provide enough room for most users.

Pros

  • Adjustable seat height and recline encourage movement and proper posture
  • 5-star base sits atop smooth-rolling casters, rotating 360° to support all office activities
  • Easy assembly comes with all tools and takes roughly 20 minutes

Cons

  • 1D armrests only offer height adjustability
  • Many chairs arrive damaged thanks to Sadie’s poor shipping process

Best Bariatric Office Chair for Big & Tall Users: 3156 Bariatric Task

At A Glance
  • Price: $2,643.87
  • Height: 50 inches
  • Best for: Bariatric individuals
  • Available Colors: Black, Burgundy, Navy, Real Red, Slate
  • Warranty: 6 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 800 pounds; features a 28.5″ seat and 3″ of height adjustability
  • BIFMA-certified 7-star steel base provides the sturdiest foundation of any big & tall chair on the market
  • Ergo Air Suspension distributes weight, encouraging proper circulation throughout the workday

So far, I’ve showcased chairs that cap out at 500 pounds. Despite this respectable weight limit, that just won’t do it for some users. If you’re on the higher end of the big & tall spectrum and need a chair that’s built like a tank, Concept Seating’s 3156 Bariatric Task is the only model up for the challenge — supporting 800 pounds without an ounce of hesitation.

The Bariatric is the largest chair I’ve ever encountered, with a 28.5″ seat width that supports the widest individuals (with room to spare). Its 7-star base features solid metal construction that’s ANSI and BIFMA certified to today’s highest standards, while the 10-gauge steel frame provides extreme strength throughout the upper portion of the chair. Aside from durability, my favorite thing about the 2156 is that it sacrifices very little in the ergonomics department. Even with its all-star weight capacity, the chair offers a specialized Air Suspension seat that distributes weight for increased circulation, as well as tilt, lumbar, and armrest mechanisms.

As you may expect, all of these top-tier features do come with a hefty price tag. The Bariatric Task starts at over $2,500 and gets more expensive with every additional accessory.

Pros

  • Bariatric Tilt provides multiple backrest angles for personalized support
  • Four pre-configured seat depth options fit big & tall users of varying heights
  • Robust, steel armrests with PU padding adjust in height and width, offering upper body adaptability for different postures

Cons

  • $2,500 price tag may be prohibitively expensive
  • Unique, under-seat adjustment mechanisms can be challenging to reach

Best Ergonomic Big & Tall Office Chair: MAXNOMIC Titanus

At A Glance
  • Price: $569
  • Height: 58.3 inches
  • Best for: Ergonomics, supportive seating
  • Available Colors: Black, Orange, Red, Silver, White

  • Reclines up to 67° via MAXNOMIC’s multi-tilt and recline mechanisms
  • Class IV gas cylinder and 5-star aluminum base provide excellent sturdiness in every position

As an office chair specialist, I’ve used and owned many quality models over the years. Out of all the brands I’ve tried, MAXNOMIC remains one of my favorites. From the moment you touch down in one of the company’s luxurious seats, you can tell that the proprietary PU leather and cold-cure foam will keep you supported over the long term, with a firmness that keeps you upright yet compresses like butter. The build quality is also quite apparent, particularly concerning MAXNOMIC’s legendary multi-tilt mechanism, which adjusts seat and backrest angle up to 67°.

The Titanus sets itself apart from other MAXNOMIC chairs with its extra-large 5-star aluminum base that measures 31.5″ in diameter. Alongside MAXNOMIC’s Class IV gas and steel-frame construction, the chair’s heavy-duty design supports individuals up to 385 pounds and roughly 7′ tall! The MAXNOMIC’s extreme adaptability and robust craftsmanship mean you can sit down and lean back as far as you like, trusting in the company’s commitment to quality to keep you safe and secure.

Pros

  • 4D armrests move in every direction, even pivoting inward and outward
  • Cold-cure foam provides the ideal level of firmness, providing excellent support without sacrificing comfort
  • Durable PU leather lasts several years of daily use

Cons

  • PU armrests lack much padding
  • Unlike some Maxnomic chairs, the Titanus offers no dedicated lumbar support dial

Best Mid-Back Big & Tall Office Chair: SPACE Seating Big & Tall

At A Glance
  • Price: $459.99
  • Height: 45 inches
  • Weight: 41 lbs
  • Best for: Mid and lower back support
  • Available Colors: Black

Highlights
  • Accommodates users up to 400 pounds; features a 22″ seat and 4″ of height adjustability
  • AirGrid backrest with adjustable lumbar system encourages airflow and proper lower back support
  • 5-star aluminum base provides excellent stability

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty mid-back office chair that feels like you’re sitting on air, the Space Seating Big & Tall is the model for you. It offers a little bit of everything, from a comfy padded seat and mesh backrest to multiple settings that encompass height, tilt, and swivel mechanics. I also love the lumbar support, which takes the mid-size design into overdrive, supporting your lower back with personalized pressure for just the right amount of oomph.

The only thing holding SPACE Seating back is its mid-range 22″ seat that makes it best suited for users around 300 pounds. While its gunmetal base can support users up to 400 pounds, it may not provide enough room for optimal comfort. If you’re unsure and want to try it anyway, the generous 30-day return period and lifetime guaranty mean you’re covered should anything go wrong.

Pros

  • 2D height-and width-adjustable armrests support big & tall users
  • Multiple tilt mechanisms provide control over seat and backrest angles
  • Classy all-black design meshes with most office decor

Cons

  • Smaller width makes it best for users around 300 pounds
  • Lumbar support only moves up and down with no width mechanism
