The 15 Best Ergonomic Chairs for Office Work & Play

A bad office chair is like a broken arm — painful, hard to maneuver, and near impossible to work with. An ergonomic office chair, on the other hand, feels like a true extension of your body. You don’t even think about it after a while. Your chair just works, moving with you and supporting your workflow as easily as your fingers glide across the keyboard.

If you’re stuck in an ill-suited office chair, it’s time to slide into something more suitable. To help out, I’ve lined up 15 of the top ergonomic chairs on the market, including an array of adaptive models designed to increase your comfort and boost productivity. The new WFH economy is here. Now, let’s get you set up properly.

How We Evaluated These Ergonomic Chairs

To better understand how different chairs respond in different work environments, I physically tested dozens of today’s most popular ergonomic models. I also read hundreds of user reviews, comparing common thoughts on each chair against the following criteria:

1. Adjustability – Ergonomic chairs are adjustable by nature, and the best options include mechanisms that affect height, recline, lumbar, and more. Although more adjustability isn’t always better, I only included models with at least three customizable settings.

2. Comfort – It’s hard to focus when you’re uncomfortable. It’s also hard to focus when you’re too relaxed. To solve this catch-22, I looked for ergonomic chairs that strike a perfect balance, providing ample comfort while supporting an upright posture.

3. Craftsmanship – My goal is to showcase chairs that can withstand several years of daily use, and quality is key to that. As such, I only chose models with durable components and lasting warranties.

4. Design – Chairs come in all shapes and sizes, and everyone’s taste is different. That said, this list only incorporates models that fit the modern office aesthetic, promoting harmony and not disarray.

5. Budget – When finalizing this guide, I added ergonomic chairs ranging from $100 to $1500. No matter your budget, there’s an excellent option here for you.

After taking everything into account, the following list includes the best ergonomic chairs for today’s most common sitting situations.

Imagine sitting on a cloud, way up in the sky. If you’re like me, you can almost feel the weightlessness, the ease, the sensation of pure, blissful comfort as you glide around. Now imagine that in chair form. That’s what the Steelcase Leap feels like when you sit in it.

Despite its simple appearance, the Steelcase Leap is the most ergonomic chair on the market, bar none. Take the contoured backrest, for instance. It incorporates Steelcase’s LiveBack® technology, which adapts as you move to provide perfect spinal flexion throughout the workday. Then there’s the Natural glide system, which ensures proper posture through synchronous movement across the set and back. Combined with its dozens of other adaptivity features, the Steelcase Leap is the most ergonomic chair I’ve had the pleasure of using. I highly recommend giving it a try for yourself.

  • Manual lumbar height and tension mechanisms provide pin-point support for your lower back
  • Angled seat and air-pocket cushion relieve pressure on your sacrum and tailbone

The ErgoChair Pro works well in every office environment, ranging from at-home studies to large corporate spaces. I’m not just referring to its universally pleasing aesthetic or flashy pops of color, either. The ErgoChair Pro actually boasts over 12 adjustment mechanisms, making it an ideal solution for engineers, marketers, artists, and everyone in between.

Take the backrest, for example. You can adjust its height, depth, recline, and tilt, to name just a few areas of adaptability. The ErgoChair’s 3D armrests also pivot in every direction, supporting your arms as you move around your work area. What’s more, most of the chair’s functionality works via easy-access levers, making it quite straightforward to use. The only real caveat is the ErgoPro’s headrest, which — in a strange deviation from the rest of the design — requires reaching behind you and pulling with a great deal of force.

  • Molded foam cushion and polyester mesh back blend comfort and breathability
  • 3D armrests move up and down, front to back, and side to side
  • Human-inspired design works with your spine’s curvature to improve circulation and build core strength
  • Armrests wobble when fully extended
  • Headrest can be difficult to adjust

When it comes to office ergonomics, the most challenging aspect is maintaining good posture throughout the workday. Proper posture is essential because it sets the stage for your overall health and productivity. Too upright, and it’s painful. Too slouched or reclined, and your body naturally loses focus.

The all33 Backstrong C1 is unique in that it doesn’t just encourage good posture — it demands it. Developed by a licensed chiropractor, the Backstrong features a proprietary technology called Sit In Motion®, which cradles your tailbone and autocorrects your posture alongside every micromovement. This autocorrection functionality helps you build core strength and remain upright, making the Backstrong C1 pivotal in supporting a proper, supportive workflow. Although it lacks many of the adjustment mechanisms found in other ergonomic chairs, the Backstrong C1 is my go-to choice for posture and back pain support.

  • Molded foam seat provides extra comfort while working
  • 100% recyclable design incorporates luxurious vegan leather or classic soft fabric
  • Pivoting seat builds core strength while encouraging blood flow and muscle oxygenation
  • $799 is pricey considering the simpler craftsmanship
  • Despite innovative design, the C1 isn’t as adjustable as competing options

Everyone knows about the Herman Miller Aeron. It’s among the most popular ergonomic chairs ever made, with a 30-year track record of research-backed excellence. Among the Aeron’s vast array of features, its world-class Pellicle Suspension is arguably the most popular. This system comprises a criss-cross of flexible supports stitched together with a breathable 8Z mesh, providing a cradle-like foundation for exceptional spring and buoyancy. The chair also sports nearly a dozen high-quality adjustment mechanisms, accommodating users from 4’8″ to 6’7″.

The downside to such quality craftsmanship is that you get what you pay for, and the price can be prohibitively expensive. If price is an obstacle, consider looking for a used model on Amazon or eBay. With over seven million sold, there are plenty of refurbished Aerons on the aftermarket (just be careful, as these lack Herman Miller’s excellent warranty).

  • Iconic design blends perfectly with most office spaces
  • Comes in three sizes (A, B, and C) to fit users from 4’8″ to 6’7″
  • Versatile armrests feature thick cushioning for excellent arm support
  • Arm and lumbar mechanisms are located in the rear, making them difficult to adjust
  • One of the most expensive models on the market

Best Budget Ergonomic Chair: Alera Elusion

At A Glance
  • Price: $157.72
  • Height: 48.8 inches
  • Weight: 56.2 lbs
  • Best for: Smaller Budgets
  • Available Colors: Black
Highlights
  • Height-adjustable mesh back offers reliable lumbar support
  • Thick, padded seat with waterfall edge relieves pressure points
  • Comes with a reclinable seat and backrest, adjusted individually or as a pair
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Elusion from Alera on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Ergonomic chairs are essential in today’s sitting-centric work environment. Although more expensive models offer the best support, you shouldn’t forego a new chair just because of your budget. The Alera Elusion is an excellent compromise, providing superior comfort and adjustability for roughly $100.

While the Elusion does incorporate some cheaper materials, that’s the kind of tradeoff you’d expect. Fortunately, it doesn’t affect much in the way of ergonomics, as the Elusion performs tricks you can’t even find in $1,000 chairs. One of the most significant — and my personal favorite — is the height-adjustable mesh back. This S-shaped component provides the ideal amount of lumbar cushioning, and you can slide it down to the precise location needed for suitable support. The Elusion also has a multi-setting tilt mechanism and all the basic height settings necessary to support your workflow.

  • Rugged 5-star base with height-adjustable gas pump rotates 360°
  • Contoured components cradle your body
  • Such ergonomic support is typically relegated to chairs twice the price
  • Does not support users over 250 pounds
  • Foam seat lacks mesh’s breathability

Best Ergonomic Chair Under $300: Branch Ergonomic Chair

At A Glance
  • Price: $299
  • Height: 42 Inches
  • Weight: 35 lbs
  • Best for: Mid-range budgets, firm lumbar support
  • Available Colors: Black, Light Blue, Gray
Highlights
  • 7-point adjustment profile includes height, depth, and recline settings
  • Contoured 40 ILD foam seat and woven mesh back provide ample support
  • 3D armrests support your workflow and posture
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Ergonomic Chair from Branch on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

While the Elusion is great for budgets under $150, the Branch is a significant step up. If you can afford the $300 price tag, the Branch’s 7-point adjustment profile offers tons of extra adaptability, including 4″ of height adjustability and 3-directional armrest movement. The foam seat and woven mesh back also deliver outstanding day-long comfort.

At the core of all these features, the Branch Ergonomic Chair features a durable aluminum base that supports 300 pounds. Although it has a few quirks here and there — the wobbly armrest can become quite annoying — the Branch Ergonomic Chair is still the best ergonomic bang for your buck.

  • Assembles in roughly 15 minutes
  • Boasts 20° of tilt and 4″ of height adjustability
  • Durable, anodized aluminum base rotates 360° atop smooth-rolling casters
  • Wobbly armrests, even at lower height settings
  • Select users find the thick seat cushion too firm

Best Ergonomic Chair for Gaming: Secretlab TITAN Evo

At A Glance
  • Price: $449

  • The L-ADAPT™ Lumbar Support System conforms with your spine to encourage healthy posture
  • Proprietary pebble seat offers an ergonomic foundation complete with upward-arching edges for extra sitting room
  • Warranty: 5 Years

  • Shipping: $29

Check out the TITAN Evo from Secretlab on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Sit back and relax — controller in one hand, brew in the other — with the Secretlab TITAN Evo. The TITAN is the best ergonomic chair for gaming, beating out dozens of other models I tested. The secret to Secretlab’s success is its towering executive backrest and L-Adapt Lumbar Support™, which cradle your entire back for unadulterated comfort all night long. The TITAN’s setting mechanisms are also incredibly intuitive, letting you wrestle your in-game enemies rather than your IRL chair.

In terms of the seat itself, the TITAN features a contoured ‘Pebble’ cushion filled with Secretlab’s patent-pending cold-cure foam. While some find the foam too firm, I enjoy how supportive it feels, keeping me aloft and focused as I go for the win.

  • Executive-style backrest provides full-body support
  • ADC12 aluminum base with Class IV hydraulics proffers a sturdy, height-adjustable base
  • Finishes include SoftWeave™ Plus Fabric, NEO™ Hybrid Leatherette, and luxurious NAPA leather
  • New L-Adapt Lumbar Support™ makes slight noises while adjusting
  • Although ideal for proper posture, many users find the TITAN’s cold-cure foam too firm

Best Ergonomic Chair for Long Hours: Steelcase Gesture

At A Glance
  • Price: $1,199
  • Height: 44.25 inches
  • Weight: 78 lbs
  • Best for: Phone, tablet, and computer work
  • Available Colors: Black, Merle, Platinum
Highlights
  • 3D LiveBack arcs with your spine and ensures constant contact with the lower back
  • Gesture 360 armrests move in three directions, with several inches of adaptability each way
  • Synchronous backrest and seat adjust together for full-body support
  • Warranty: Lifetime
  • Return Period: 14 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Gesture from Steelcase on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Designed by a team of expert ergonomists, the Steelcase Gesture is a masterclass in office seating. Its effectiveness lies in Steelcase’s innovative 3D LiveBack®, a proprietary technology that adjusts to your body’s natural movements on a moment-by-moment basis. Together with the variable tilt mechanism, these human-centric features ensure adequate comfort as you move about your workday.

The main downside to the Gesture is its 78-pound frame, which is a burden to assemble and cumbersome to move. To get around this one caveat, I encourage you to build the Gesture in your actual office, so there’s no awkward movement or risk of injury when finished (trust me, I speak from experience). It’ll all feel worth it once you’re sitting atop the luxurious foam cushions and enjoying your new workmate.

  • Minimalist aesthetic blends into every office environment
  • Lumbar support dial provides customizable support
  • Adaptive bolstering air pockets underneath cushiony foam provides a pressure-free sitting experience
  • Fabric seating lacks breathability of mesh
  • Heavy weight profile can be cumbersome to move around the office

Best Breathable Ergonomic Chair: Herman Miller Sayl

At A Glance
  • Price: $595
  • Height: 40.75 inches
  • Weight: 54 lbs
  • Best for: Breathability, movement
  • Available Colors: 19 colors
Highlights
  • Elastomer (a rubber-like polymer) backrest contracts and expands as you move
  • Harmonic Tilt encourages balance and proper posture across all four recline settings
  • 3D armrests provide enough flexibility for most work environments
  • Warranty: 12 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Sayl from Herman Miller on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

When it comes to the Herman Miller Sayl, you either love it or hate it. While I’m not a big fan of the aesthetic (seriously, what were the designers thinking), I am a big fan of the ergonomic design. The Sayl is the only chair I’ve come across to incorporate an elastomer seat, and it does so to great effect. The unique suspension provides a flexible sitting experience that isn’t as stiff as mesh; rather, it’s completely soft and supportive, providing an excellent level of give that cradles your back. The diamond-pattern weave is also much more breathable than mesh, making it an ideal option for hotter environments and those who appreciate airflow.

Perhaps my favorite part of all is that the Sayl comes in at under $600, a fraction of the Aeron’s price. While it doesn’t come with as many adjustments, it does provide access to Herman Miller’s overall quality and attention to detail.

  • Contoured backrest and injection-molded foam seat offer day-long comfort
  • Diamond-mesh design offers the most breathability of any office chair on the market
  • Offers Herman Miller’s quality craftsmanship for a fraction of the Aeron
  • Controversial design; some love it, and some hate it
  • Extra features — like adjustable lumbar support — cost extra

Best Ergonomic Chair for Easy Adjustments: Eurotech iOO

At A Glance
  • Price: $1,640
  • Height: 46 inches
  • Weight: 69 lbs
  • Best for: Adjustability, simplicity
  • Available Colors: 26 Colors
Highlights
  • Single adjustment mechanism controls over six ergonomic settings
  • Spring-adjusted lumbar support adapts to your sitting posture for consistent cushioning
  • Synchro-Tilt mechanism keeps seat and back angle in perfect alignment
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the iOO from Eurotech on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

The Eurotech iOO features over half a dozen adjustment mechanisms, affecting everything from recline to depth. While this is more than many competing chairs, it’s not the only reason the iOO made this list.

The iOO’s real pièce de résistance is its all-in-one system that lets you adjust the chair using a single lever on the right-side undercarriage. This lever affects everything on the chair, with an intuitive effect that mimicks its function. For example, pulling it up affects the seat’s height, while pulling it backward activates the iOO’s clever Synchro-Tilt mechanism. The iOO is so powerful that it’s almost too easy to make adjustments that affect your entire sitting experience.

  • Mesh waterfall seat relieves tension on your tailbone
  • Greenguard Certification guarantees overall quality and eco-safety
  • 4D height, depth, width, and rotational armrests among the most versatile on the market
  • Takes some time to understand the all-in-one adjustment mechanism
  • Almost too easy to make adjustments

Best Multipurpose Ergonomic Chair: HON Ignition 2.0

At A Glance
  • Price: $399
  • Height: 52.5 inches
  • Weight: 51 lbs
  • Best for: Sit-to-stand desks, drafting
  • Available Colors: Black, Breeze, Brownstone, Charcoal, Fog, Regatta, Titanium, White
Highlights
  • Features your choice of standard upholstery, breathable 4-way mesh, or ReActiv elastomers
  • Hon’s Synchro-Tilt backrest reclines with the seat at a 2-to-1 ratio for proper postural support
  • Adjustable footring moves up and down several inches, ensuring broad compatibility with various heights
  • Warranty: Lifetime
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Ignition 2.0 from HON on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Since every office setup and workflow looks different, finding a chair that supports them all can be a hassle. Although this ~$300 isn’t particularly glamorous, the HON Ignition 2.0 does excel in nearly every environment.

It all starts at the foundation, a durable 5-star base with smooth-rolling casters. Although designed for carpet, these casters also roll incredibly well across hardwood and tile. Moving upwards, the waterfall seat provides exceptional comfort during extended work hours, and the 4-way mesh backrest provides ergonomic support with incredible breathability. I find it to be an excellent (and affordable) option for work-from-home and corporate office environments.

  • Accommodates users up to 300 pounds
  • Thin bezel frame and waterfall seat cushion eliminate pain points
  • Smooth-rolling casters glide across carpet and hardwood with ease
  • Lumbar support doesn’t provide as much cushioning as it should
  • Despite universal design, it lacks some higher-end adjustability mechanisms

Best Mid-Back Ergonomic Chair: NeueChair

At A Glance
  • Price: $549
  • Height: 44.4 inches
  • Weight: 64 lbs
  • Best for: Breathability, suspension
  • Available Colors: Obsidian, Silver
Highlights
  • Elastic NeueMesh™ finish suspends your body for excellent support and airflow
  • ControlShift™ levers on both armrests provide height and recline functionality at your fingertips
  • Adjustable lumbar bracing augments NeueMesh™ for quality back support
  • Warranty: 12 Years
  • Return Period: 49 Days
  • Shipping: $29

Check out the NeueChair from SecretLab on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Many mid-back chairs provide excellent low- and mid-back support without all the bulkiness of executive backrests. But none do it as well as the NeueChair from Secretlab.

The NeueChair features a supportive, C-shaped backrest clad in the company’s proprietary NeueMesh™ fabric. Together with the NeueChair’s adjustable lumbar system, these features cradle your body like a blanket, from sacrum to neck. When it comes to adjustability, finding the perfect position for work is easy-as-can-be — all you need to do is tap the NeueChair’s ControlShift™ levers conveniently located on the armrests. Doing so offers instant control over essential ergonomic functions like height and recline. While the chair’s premium materials make it heavier than competing mid-height models, the NeueChair is still wonderfully accessible compared to its high-back counterparts.

  • Class IV hydraulic pistons and ADC12 aluminum base ensure overall stability
  • Seat Slide moves forward and back
  • Reclines from 85 to 130°, one of the highest ranges found on a mid-back office chair
  • Weight load caps at 240 pounds
  • Premium materials make it one of the heaviest mid-back chairs at over 60 pounds

Best High-Back Ergonomic Chair: Haworth Fern

At A Glance
  • Price: $1,049
  • Height: 47 inches
  • Weight: 49 lbs
  • Best for: Full back support, big and tall users
  • Available Colors: Beach, Coal
Highlights
  • Wave Suspension backrest distributes your weight as you work
  • 4-directional armrests encourage proper posture while supporting your shoulders and neck
  • Edge-less design enables body movement without pain or discomfort
  • Warranty: 12 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Fern from Haworth on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

I’ve tested several high-back chairs over the past couple of years, and most of them were large and cumbersome, lacking much freedom of movement. The Haworth Fern is a notable exception, providing a tall backrest that reaches above the head while providing a curvy, tapered design that’s classy and flexible.

The primary reason for the Fern’s effectiveness is its lightweight, spine-inspired design that moves like your actual back. The frameless backrest literally flexes with you as you work and recline, distributing your weight across its breathable web. Although quite firm, the Fern is easily one of the more supportive options on the market, with an overall look and feel that excels in ergonomics.

  • Tilt tension mechanism offers free-flowing movement, backed by five built-in lockable positions
  • Provides 6” of height adjustability
  • Robust base accommodates users up to 325 pounds
  • Armrests lack a locking mechanism, and they’re prone to moving during the workday
  • Firm cushion provides a stable foundation but lacks in comfort

Best Mesh Ergonomic Chair: X1 Flex Mesh

At A Glance
  • Price: $699.99
  • Height: 54 inches
  • Weight: 51 lbs
  • Best for: Lower back pain
  • Available Colors: Black, Grey
Highlights
  • Flex Mesh weave suspend your body in the chair, relieving pressure points while providing excellent airflow
  • X-Chair’s DVL (Dynamic Variable Lumbar) continually adjusts the lower back support
  • Optional cooling, heat, and massage functionality provide enhanced back pain relief
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Flex Mesh from X1 on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

The X1 Flex Mesh may look ordinary, but it’s actually one of the most innovative mesh chairs on the market. This enviable status comes courtesy of X-Chair’s proprietary Flex Mesh upholstery, a unique weave that’s soft, flexible, and breathable to the utmost degree. You’ll find the Flex Mesh spread across the entire chair, including in the Dynamic Variable Lumbar. Alongside the fabric, this dynamic duo offers excellent breathability and support for your entire back.

The main drawback to the X1 is also one of its most remarkable features. For an extra $100 to $200, you can access X-Chair’s innovative Elemax add-ons, which incorporate additional cooling, heating, and massage functionality.

  • 4D armrests adjust to every position
  • EVR backrest features up-and-down adaptability with automatic recline
  • Seat slides forward and back, helping you lock in an ergonomic posture
  • Independently-adjustable headrest costs an additional $50
  • With several mechanisms affecting similar components, it’s challenging to find the ideal

Best Ergonomic Desk Chair: Fully Desk Chair

At A Glance
  • Price: $299
  • Height: 41.3 inches
  • Weight: 46 pounds
  • Best for: Mid-range budgets
  • Available Colors: Black, Blue, Gray
Highlights
  • Mesh back provides breathability and moderate springiness
  • 3D armrests accommodate various sitting postures
  • Contoured seat pan and backrest mimic your body’s inherent curvature
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free

Check out the Fully Desk Chair from Fully  on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

The wonderful thing about the Fully Desk Chair is that it just works. Although it’s not overly fancy or feature-rich, its timeless aesthetic and essential adjustability mechanisms provide all the functionality you need for regular desk work. Moreover, despite its minute thickness, the contoured seat cushion delivers all the support you need for long hours at the keyboard.

Perhaps the strangest thing about the Fully is its blend of premium and lower-quality components. For instance, the base is a rugged aluminum (typically reserved for chairs in the $500 price range), while the multi-directional plastic armrests are flimsy and tend to slide around.

  • Aluminum base delivers superb durability
  • Adaptable armrests move up, down, and side-to-side
  • Clean and simple aesthetic complements most environments
  • Plastic armrests feel a bit “cheap” and lack any locking mechanism
  • Complicated assembly with over a dozen individual components and tools
