DXRacer vs. Secretlab

Comparing DXRacer vs. Secretlab: Products, Pricing, Quality & More

The battle between DXRacer vs. Secretlab is a tale as old as time. It represents the classic struggle for dominance — a fight between an established industry titan and an upstart newcomer with a chip on its shoulder.

On one side, there’s DXRacer, a 20-year gaming chair veteran known for its consistent quality and craftsmanship. On the other side, there’s Secretlab, a marketing maverick that’s dominating the industry after six short years in business.

Although DXRacer and Secretlab both create comfortable chairs, each company takes a unique approach to design and development. As such, you may find one brand better suited for your body, playstyle, and wallet.

That’s why I created this guide — to discuss the differences between the companies and their products, with an in-depth look at critical strengths and weaknesses. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll know which one to choose for your battlestation. If that sounds like a plan, let’s begin with an overview of each brand.

DXRacer Basics

Most people know that racing-style gaming chairs — with their lofty backrests and bucket seats — are the most popular option among PC players. What a lot of people don’t know is that DXRacer practically invented the category.

The company launched way back in 2001 and was one of the first brands to merge the car seat with the office chair. Unlike those early days, DXRacer now faces stiff competition. Yet, it still retains significant market share among gaming chair enthusiasts. More importantly, it continues to lead the pack, dropping innovative new product lineups and partnering with the most prominent eSports organizations and professional gamers around. Here are just a few recent partnerships showcasing the massive influence DXRacer has on the industry:

  • Riot Games
  • Valve
  • MLG
  • T1
  • Ninjas in Pyjamas
  • Natus Vincere

DXRacer markets its chairs in “series,” even though every chair in a series is the same (save for color). Even though DXRacer has nearly a dozen different series in its lineup, its classic chair models are still the bestsellers. This includes the Legacy Series, the Gladiator Series, the Tank series, and the royal family series of chairs. These classic gaming chairs start around $250 and feature standard steel frames, molded foam, and PU leather blend. If you’re seeking something new, DXRacer also offers more innovative options, including the all-mesh AIR and the multi-purpose MASTER series.

Secretlab Basics

Secretlab is the brainchild of Ian Aang and Alaric Choo, two competitive StarCraft players who left the sci-fi-inspired battlefield behind in favor of a new frontier: Secretlab.

The pair began their Singaporean company back in 2014. Using sensationalism-style marketing, the brand quickly rose the ranks to become one of the best-selling and most popular gaming chair manufacturers to date. The brand claims to have sold over one million of its elegant OMEGA and TITAN gaming chairs, and Google Trends shows that it’s continuing to grow in popularity at a rapid pace. In recent years, Secretlab has partnered with the most prevalent gaming and entertainment brands on the planet:

  • Blizzard Entertainment
  • CD Projekt Red
  • Disney
  • 100 Thieves
  • Cloud 9
  • Team Liquid

Evidently, dominating the gaming chair industry isn’t enough for the ambitious company. In recent months, Secretlab has launched an entirely new project: the MAGNUS Gaming Desk (our pick for best gaming desk). Considering the pace at which this agile startup moves, I expect we’ll see many exciting new products in 2022 and beyond.

Secretlab Pros

  • Products feature sleek, minimal designs that work well in gaming rooms and offices
  • Secretlab’s patent-pending cold-cure foam is exceptionally supportive
  • Fantastic ergonomic designs, with contoured seat cushions and integrated lumbar support
  • Latest 2022 model comes in three different sizes, ensuring an easy shopping process for everyone

Secretlab Cons

  • High starting prices; shipping costs extra
  • Some individuals find Secretlab’s materials too firm
  • Newest chairs incorporate unnecessary magnetic gimmick on the armrest and headrest
  • Company engages in sensationalism-style marketing tactics, trademarking the names of standard materials to make them seem more appealing

Secretlab reimagined its entire chair lineup for 2022, combining the OMEGA and TITAN into one singular unit: the Secretlab TITAN Evo. Building on years of R&D, the Titan EVO features a timeless, executive design that comes clad in PU, SoftWeave, or genuine Napa Leather upholstery. It’s the first Secretlab chair to incorporate built-in adjustable lumbar support, and I’ve found it to be among the comfiest office chairs on the market.

Other Models from Secretlab

  • Secretlab OMEGA ($364) – The Secretlab OMEGA is a slimmed-down yet fully functional version of the 2020 TITAN, suitable for users over 4′11″ and under 240 pounds.
  • Secretlab TITAN ($409) – The 2020 TITAN raised the proverbial bar with more durable leatherette and enhanced adaptability, and you can still attain it for ~$400 on Secretlab’s website.
  • Secretlab TITAN XL ($494) – For the big & tall users out there, the Secretlab TITAN XL — with its reinforced frame and aluminum base — accommodates the tallest gamers (up to 6′10″) and boasts a 390-pound weight capacity.

How Do DXRacer and Secretlab Stack Up?

DXRacer and Secretlab specialize in two different areas. DXRacer embraces its racing roots with various makes and models, flashy color schemes, bucket seats, and aggressive flared edges. Meanwhile, Secretlab takes a more sophisticated route, incorporating darker, muted tones that work as well in the office as they do in the gaming room.

Product Design

Gaming Chair Designs

Although DXRacer and Secretlab chairs share a similar executive-style frame, the two company’s have wildly different design philosophies.

DXRacer remains true to its original racing-inspired mission, continually releasing flashy chairs that look like they’ve come straight from the track. Many of the most popular DXRacer chairs come in bright blues and reds, and there’s a trend toward racing stripes and bold, contrasting colors. The chairs also incorporate massive backrests and seat cushions with wings that protrude outward at a sharp, diagonal angle.

Secretlab, on the other hand, usually releases its chairs in drops. To start, there’s an all-black PU leather variant. Over time, the company begins to add additional options, with grays, silvers, and pale blues at the forefront. Later in the product lifecycle, you’ll find officially licensed eSports variants and branded special editions. But even these are toned-down with muted colors and flush design elements that blend into the frame itself. Although you’re still getting a racing-style frame, it’s a little less angular and more like a traditional office chair than a Forza speedster.

Verdict: When it comes to DXRacer vs. Secretlab, DXRacer is flashy and wild, while Secretlab is muted and restrained.

Comfort

Alongside the release of Secretlab’s 2020 TITAN, the company rolled out a more supportive cold-cure foam. I find this foam much nicer than the previous iteration, as it reduces sag and keeps posture in check. That said, some users claim that it’s too firm — a valid argument that comes down to personal preference.

DXRacer’s memory foam is softer, with a little more give. Most of its chairs also come with fluffy lumbar and headrest pillows that further amplify your comfort. If you’re someone who can feel a pebble underneath your mattress, DXRacer is probably the best choice for you.

However, Secretlab takes home the crown when it comes to relaxation and recline-ability. The Secretlab TITAN Evo reclines down to 165° while the DXRacer Gladiator drops to a measly 135°. If you like to kick back and play with a controller in hand, the TITAN is the way to go.

Verdict: DXRacer is cushier, while Secretlab offers better recline.

Ergonomics

Secretlab Build

The average gamer averages over an hour a day seated in front of their gaming station. That number increases sharply among more serious players. Fortunately, the teams at DXRacer vs. Secretlab have gaming backgrounds and understand the need for a supportive chair that keeps players going deep into the night.

Although DXRacer manufactures a wide range of chairs, all of them include 360° swivel bases, recline-ability, and tilt mechanisms. They also feature multi-dimensional armrests that adjust in up to four directions: up and down, front to back, left and right, and diagonal. The company even includes lumbar pillows and a neck pillow free with most purchases, bolstering support in those two critical areas.

But while DXRacer is respectable, Secretlab is exceptional. The Titan EVO includes a multi-tilt mechanism and high-quality 4D armrests with every chair. It also comes with a best-in-class L-Adapt Lumbar System, forgoing the less-supportive pillow in favor of two dials that adjust lumbar cushioning up and down, front to back. I’ve found that this lumbar system delivers pinpoint support in the injury-prone lower back, skyrocketing Secretlab into the top echelons of adjustable office chairs.

Verdict: DXRacer’s chair models offer excellent support, but Secretlab does it better.

Durability

DXRacer didn’t get to be the best-selling gaming chair manufacturer by creating cheap products. Aside from its slightly-inferior nylon base, DXRacer generally incorporates top-notch craftsmanship. You’ll find BIFMA-certified Class IV gas lifts, resilient PVC leather, and precision-machined mechanisms on nearly every model. DXRacer’s chairs also come with a robust steel frame, complete with an unlimited lifetime warranty. Should the tubular steel frame break or fall apart, DXRacer will replace your chair, no questions asked.

Unfortunately, DXRacer doesn’t back up the rest of its materials, offering a lousy 2-year warranty on fabric, foam, and mechanical components. You shouldn’t run into any issues, but it’s always nice to see a company demonstrate its belief in a product with a lasting warranty.

Secretlab takes a different approach. It includes a 3-year warranty on every component, including the ADC12 aluminum base and patent-pending materials. You can also pay $50 or share a picture of your chair on social media to extend the warranty to five years! I’ve used a Secretlab Titan for months at a time and have never encountered a single durability-related issue, even when continually adjusting components for testing purposes.

It’s safe to say that Secretlab builds its chairs to last, and you should enjoy several years of gaming on the TITAN Evo.

Verdict: DXRacer and Secretlab both incorporate durable materials.

Price

Secretlab offers a small selection of goods at a premium price tag. The company is still phasing out its more affordable 2020 stock, which means you can still find a deal under $400. But soon, you’ll find yourself paying $450 or more for every chair. What’s worse, potential upgrades can cost you over $1,000. This is unattainable for a large portion of the population, a shame considering Secretlab’s health- and comfort-oriented benefits.

Meanwhile, DXRacer offers something for every budget. You can get started with a DXRacer gaming chair for around $200, or spend up to $800 on more luxurious models. The company also hosts regular sales, dropping prices drastically to encourage new business and keep its stock fresh.

Of course, you generally get what you pay for. DXRacer’s budget chairs can’t compete head-to-head with Secretlab, which includes more support, adaptability, and quality-of-life features. To attain Secretlab-level quality, you’ll need to buy one of DXRacer’s more expensive chairs.

Verdict: DXRacer is more affordable, but Secretlab still delivers excellent bang for your buck.

Comparable Chairs You Should Consider

  • GTRACING GT099 | Amazon ($114.99) – If you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford the DXRacer vs. Secretlab, you may want to try the GT099; it offers a slimmed-down set of features yet retains racing-style comfort and aesthetics.
  • noblechairs Icon | Amazon ($429.99) – The noblechairs Icon costs the same price as a Secretlab TITAN or DXRacer King, but it forgoes the traditional racing aesthetic for a unique, executive design that’s classy and elegant.
  • all33 BackStrong C1 ($799) – While DXRacer and Secretlab offer plenty of support, the all33 BackStrong C1 is the best ergonomic chair around, providing posture-perfect back support, always.

DXRacer vs. Secretlab: Which Is Better?

DXRacer Design

DXRacer and Secretlab both have their moments, and each excels in different situations. DXRacer is best for gamers who enjoy playful aesthetics and have smaller monetary resources. Secretlab, on the other hand, is ideal for office and gaming spaces. It also places a heavier emphasis on comfort and ergonomics.

Personally, I enjoy Secretlab more. I’m a sucker for the minimal designs, slick accents, and careful attention to detail. I’m also a huge fan of integrated lumbar support, and the new TITAN Evo 2022 outperforms simple lumbar cushions by a wide margin.

Even though I prefer Secretlab, DXRacer is neck-and-neck with its own features. I have no trouble recommending the brand to gamers who prefer the classic racing-style look and feel. DXRacer offers dozens of frame designs and color options, making DXRacer a much better choice for those who like to play with and customize their gaming experience. Not to mention, the pricing structure is much easier on the wallet, starting at nearly half the cost of a new Secretlab.

Since both company’s products share a similar level of durability, you can’t go wrong. I’d encourage you to consider your needs and budget, and select that chair that looks best to you. Both companies also offer a generous 30-day return policy, meaning you can always give one a shot and return it if things don’t work out.
