Woman Using One of the Best Adjustable Desks

The 10 Best Adjustable Desks of 2022 for Custom Ergonomics

The average desk is 29″ tall. Although humans come in all shapes and sizes, this height is usually best suited for people over 6′. The problem is, only 15% of the population passes that threshold, leaving the rest of us with a desk that’s far too big.

Working at a setup that doesn’t fit you is more than a case of mismatched proportions. It can (and often does) lead to back pain and a drastic decrease in productivity. The good news is that you can alleviate these issues by choosing one of the best adjustable desks. That’s what I’ll be showcasing in today’s article — adjustable desks that fit your body with satisfying precision, sliding into place like the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

How We Evaluated These Adjustable Desks

For a realistic view of today’s top adjustable desks, you need to do more than read superfluous sales pages. That’s why I researched manufacturer claims and tested several popular desks in person, cross-examining my findings with genuine user reviews for a more accurate overview.

Here’s a look at the criteria I used to distinguish today’s top-shelf adjustable desks:

1. Ergonomics – Most adjustable desks fit the average male and female proportions just fine (5’9″ and 5’4″, respectively). But the very best options offer even more adaptability, supporting users above the 95th percentile without a footrest or other support.

2. Durability – Typically, desks are on their last legs once pieces start moving. Adjustable desks are the opposite, and they must feature robust metal frames that can withstand the wear and tear of continuous adaptation.

3. Customizability – It’s challenging to find a one-size-fits-all desk, even when it’s adjustable. That’s why I sought out options with additional customizability — so you can mix and match elements and add-ons for a more personalized solution.

4. Fluidity – Most height-adjustable desks adapt via an electric motor, which should feature high-quality craftsmanship that moves fast and glides into place like butter.

5. Price – Adaptability doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I sought out the best deals around, showcasing top-tier ergonomics on every budget.

Using the above criteria as guidelines, I whittled the original 36-count list down to ten. The following desks represent the best in their class, providing an adjustable base that’s ready to eliminate ailments and boost performance.

  • Bamboo top provides a durable, eco-friendly work surface

Check out the Jarvis from Fully on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

When equipped with the right frame, Fully’s Jarvis is the best adjustable desk on the market. I say “when” because the entry-level Jarvis sits 29″ from the floor – far too high for an adjustable desk.

Fortunately, the company offers two additional frame options: standard and low-profile. The standard frame travels from 25.5″ to 51″, a generous height range capable of accommodating the average joe and Shaquelle O’Neal alike (seriously, it’s that adjustable). Meanwhile, the lower frame moves from 22.9″ to 43.2″, making it a reliable option for users as short as 5′ tall. No matter which you choose, Fully’s reasonable pricing starts at just $589.

Press the up-and-down touch controls to move Jarvis from sitting to standing in 17 seconds flat, enjoying Fully’s reliable Jiecang electronics and premium craftsmanship as the desk glides into place. Or, set any height as a programmable preset, and return to the perfect position each time you want to start moving. Oregon-based Fully prides itself in providing a quality product backed by years of ergonomic research, and I must admit — that isn’t just marketing hyperbole. There’s no better option than the Fully Jarvis (3-Stage Frame), and I wholeheartedly recommend it for most users.

Pros

  • Jiecang electronics provide smooth and quiet operation under 50dB
  • Incorporates anti-collision technology to protect office gear and loved ones
  • Quite sturdy, courtesy of a metal C-frame design and heavy stabilizers

Cons

  • Bamboo surface scratches fairly easily
  • Entry-level Jarvis starts at 30″ tall and only adjusts up to 49.3″

Best Budget Adjustable Desk: Flexispot Seiffen

At A Glance
  • Price: Starting at $209.99
  • Height: 28 to 47.6 inches
  • Weight: 79 lbs & up
  • Best for: Budget ergonomics
  • Available Colors: Black, Ebony, Graphite, Grey, Mahogany, Maple, Marble, Special Walnut, White, White Wood
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Desktop varies from 42″ to 55″ wide; supports up to 154 pounds
  • $200 starting price provides standing desk functionality on a small budget
  • Industrial steel T-frame expertly balances surface loads, leading to less wobble

Check out the Seiffen from FlexiSpot on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

The FlexiSpot Seiffen is one of my favorite adjustable desks. Somehow or another, the company manages to pack a ton of mid-range, ergonomic features into a $200 product that ships for free. An irresistible prospect.

In terms of features, the FlexiSpot adjusts an impressive 20″ and moves at a reasonable rate of 1″ per second. You can change the height manually via FlexiSpot’s two-button control panel or pay a $70 fee for a programmable keypad that adjusts to your preset height in seconds. Although the Seiffen doesn’t feature the highest weight capacity, 154 pounds is nothing to scoff at. Plus, the steel T-frame holds up astoundingly well, balancing your office gear with minimal shake at maximum heights.

Out of all the areas FlexiSpot could’ve gone wrong, its assembly process offers the biggest headache. I suggest you read the instructions ahead of time, lay out and mark all components, and bring a friend along to help you with the complex installation.

Pros

  • Adjusts a respectable 20″ at a speed of 1″ per second
  • Simple control panel makes adjustments quick and easy
  • Comes with an appealing minimal aesthetic with various surface colors for bespoke personalization

Cons

  • 2-stage frame with a single motor isn’t as fast or strong as competing dual-motor models
  • Poor-quality instructions lead to a challenging assembly process (at least an hour)

Best Ergonomic Adjustable Desk: Uplift V2

At A Glance
  • Price: Starting at $599
  • Height: 25.3 to 50.9 inches
  • Weight: 100 lbs & up
  • Best for: Ergonomics, customization
  • Available Colors: 20 color options
  • Warranty: 15 Years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Desktop varies from 42″ to 80″ wide; supports up to 355 pounds
  • Ergonomic frame provides a suitable base for the average male and female heights
  • Hundreds (and counting) of customization options allow personalization of everything from material to accessories

Check out the V2 from Uplift on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Uplift routinely finds its way to the top of adjustable desk wish lists. Although I prefer Fully for its simplicity and more stable, extended frames, Uplift is a serious contender. In fact, I’d recommend the V2 over Fully’s Jarvis when looking to outfit a desk to your precise specifications. The Uplift V2 is the Swiss Army Knife of the adjustable desk world, offering hundreds of color configurations, components, and add-ons without ever sacrificing core functionality.

The Uplift’s motor is also top-tier, moving at a record-setting 1.6″ per second. While some independent testers have found it moves closer to 1.4″ or 1.5″ per second, it all depends on the weight load. The Uplift is BIFMA-certified and carries up to 355 pounds (best in its class, by the way), and higher loads naturally require more effort from the dual Jiecang motors.

Pros

  • Smooth, quiet motor adjusts at 1.6″ per second
  • BIFMA-certified steel base offers a best-in-class weight capacity
  • 6-axis collision system prevents accidents and provides peace of mind

Cons

  • Lightweight aluminum feet shake and wobble a little too much
  • Many of the Uplift’s add-ons fit poorly or lack quality craftsmanship

Highlights
  • Desktop varies from 48″ to 72″ wide; supports up to 300 pounds
  • Comes with essential gaming accessories, including a PC hanger, monitor arm, and magnetic cable management system
  • Robust, multi-stage design ensures the safety and stability of your gaming electronics

Check out the Gamer Pro from MojoDesk on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

The MojoDesk Gamer Pro is my favorite adjustable desk for PC gaming. While the new IKEA Utespelare (found lower on this list) is a much more affordable solution, MojoDesk’s combination of simplicity and reliability brings home the dub.

I should know, as I’ve spent years with the MojoDesk Gamer Pro. In all my time using it, there’s never been an ounce of inappropriate shake or wobble. What’s more, the chain motor continues to maintain like a dream, moving into position as quickly as it did back on day one. As for the LED control panel and gaming accessories, they’ve provided a convenient, competitive edge, providing a tasty ergonomic upgrade free with purchase.

The MojoDesk’s price is high, but that’s what you’d expect from a quality product made in the USA. Whether you play casual or competitive, MojoDesk will take your gameplay to the next level.

Pros

  • Made in the USA from high-quality, globally-sourced components
  • LED height controller comes with four programmable presets
  • Excellent customer service should issues arise; company responds professionally within 24 hours

Cons

  • Priced relatively high, around $1,000
  • Some dislike the visible chain adjustment mechanism

Best Adjustable Desk for Stability: Vari Electric

At A Glance
  • Price: Starting $695
  • Height: 25 to 50.5 inches
  • Weight: 120 lbs & up
  • Best for: Stability, expensive equipment
  • Available Colors: Black, Butcher Block, Darkwood, Reclaimed Wood, White
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Desktop varies from 48″ to 72″ wide; supports up to 220 pounds
  • Steel T-frame provides a stable base for your work and gaming peripherals
  • Every desk comes pre-configured, providing an easy shopping experience

Check out the Electric from Vari on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Many adjustable desks fail to provide a supportive surface for your expensive office equipment. Avoid this common pitfall by choosing the Vari Electric.

Vari’s T-frame base consistently ranks among the most stable foundations in the $500 to $1,000 price range. And it’s not just me saying this. Several independent testers have found that it proffers virtually zero front-to-back and side-to-side wobble. While overall build quality is the main reason for such durability, it also comes down to Vari’s unique shopping experience. Unlike competing standing desks, you cannot customize the Vari Electric. The desk is ready to go out of the box, with a perfectly-balanced design that assembles in minutes.

Of course, the Vari’s greatest strength is also its Achilles heel. Folks seeking a more personalized desk will need to look elsewhere. What’s more, you’ll have to make do with a laminate desktop surface, as there are no bamboo or wooden upgrades available.

Pros

  • Assembles in under fifteen minutes
  • Faux wooden surfaces look and feel like the real deal, without the price tag
  • Comes with GreenGuard certifications for a guaranteed low-chemical-emission office environment

Cons

  • Lacks the weight capacity of top competitors
  • Only ships with laminate surfaces; no natural upgrades available

Best Adjustable Desktop: ApexDesk ZT Series

At A Glance
  • Price: $249.99
  • Height: 5.7 to 18.1 inches
  • Weight: 50 pounds
  • Best for: Upgrading existing desks
  • Available Colors: Black, Walnut, White
  • Warranty: 1 Year
  • Return Period: 30 Days
  • Shipping: Free
Highlights
  • Desktop size is 36″ x 24″; supports up to 90 pounds
  • Sits atop your existing desk and provides an additional 12″ of height adjustability
  • Hardy steel frame and spacious rectangular surface hold all your essential gear

Check out the ZT Series from ApexDesk on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

If you love your existing desk and don’t want to give it up, an adjustable desktop converter is the way to go. These nifty devices sit atop your existing desk and add up to 20″ or more of adjustable height. While there are many different types and styles out there, I like the ApexDesk ZT Series for several reasons.

For one, desk space is a major commodity, and the ZT Series maximizes the space available. While most converters feature giant, unnecessary contours, ApexDesk opts for a more rectangular frame, ensuring plenty of room. There’s also a built-in keyboard tray, which adds a couple square feet of space to the surface area. That said, the keyboard tray is a bit small for my liking.

Lastly, I appreciate the single-button electric control that adjusts 1″ per second. Rising from sitting to standing only takes about 12 seconds from start to finish, keeping you in the zone as you swap positions.

Pros

  • Single-button controller makes adjusting the ZT a snap
  • Adjustment mechanism moves at a respectable 1″ per second
  • Comes with a mouse and keyboard tray for better ergonomic support

Cons

  • Keyboard tray is a little small; best-suited for tenkeyless keyboards like the Apple Magic
  • May be a little too tall unless your current desk is on the shorter side

Best Low-Profile Adjustable Desk: Steelcase Solo

  • Height: 22.6 to 48.7 inches

  • Warranty: 12 Years
  • Return Period: 14 Days

Highlights
  • Desktop varies from 48″ to 60″ wide; supports up to 350 pounds
  • Low 22.6″ starting height makes the Solo an ideal option for shorter users
  • Simple up-and-down control mechanism provides easy, intuitive operation

Check out the Solo from Steelcase on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

Many desk gurus criticize the Steelcase Solo for lacking in innovation. I understand the criticism but disagree. The Solo is as innovative as the best of them, but it does things differently, prioritizing simplicity and ease of use over all else. Where most desks feature complex control panels, the Solo features a single lever: pull up to adjust higher and push down to go lower. Where other companies offer hundreds of customization options, Steelcase presents two choices: desk dimensions and color variants. And unlike other desks with hour-long assemblies, the Solo takes under five minutes to piece together.

Steelcase’s design philosophy reminds me of Apple, another company that offers stunningly simple products. Similar to the tech behemoth’s flagship products, the Solo also incorporates powerful internal components. An excellent example is the Solo’s motor, which adjusts 22.6″ to 48.7″ and supports users anywhere from 5’0″ and up. What’s more, the desk is exceptionally robust, with a T-frame that offers stability at every height, save for a teensy bit of wobble at full extension. The best part of all is that Steelcase guarantees the Solo with its legendary 12-year warranty. No matter how you prefer to work, Steelcase has you covered.

Pros

  • Stunning minimal aesthetic complements most office environments
  • Durable foundation provides reliable support with minimal wobble
  • Affordable starting price backed by Steelcase’s exceptional reputation and warranty

Cons

  • Ill-suited for users seeking a highly customizable experience
  • Lack of programmable presets may detract some users

Soar to new heights with the Evodesk Aviator™, a massive 20 square foot work surface that fits in the corner of any luxury office. I mention luxury because you’ll need a lot of space and money to attain an Aviator™. With a $2,500 entry cost, it’s definitely not for everybody. Best Manual Adjustable Desk: IKEA Utespelare

At A Glance
  • Price: $159
  • Height: 26.75 to 30.75 inches
  • Weight: 67 lbs
  • Best for: Manual adjustments, gaming, affordability
  • Available Colors: Black, Light Gray
  • Warranty: 3 Years
  • Return Period: 1 Year
  • Shipping: Varies
Highlights
  • Desktop size is 64″ by 31.5″; supports up to 110 pounds
  • Adjusts up to 4″ via an electronics-free notch system
  • Affordable pricing and minimal aesthetic provide an attainable option for different types of users

Check out the Utespelare from IKEA on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

IKEA markets the Utespelare as a gaming desk, which will probably turn some users off. But before you dismiss it, hear me out, as the Utespelare performs exceedingly well in just about every environment.

First of all, the Utespelare boasts a solid black desk that fits in with any decor, gaming or otherwise. It also packs tons of usable room into a small footprint, with a 64″ by 31.5″ surface that offers more depth than any competing adjustable desk. Granted, some of that space goes to the backside cable management system. But the convenient wire channel adds much more to ergonomics than it detracts from spatial performance.

Unlike other options on this list, the Utespelare doesn’t support standing work positions, as it only adjusts 4″ total. But that means you don’t have to worry about electric components or things breaking down, which is all too common among adjustable desks. Just be sure to set the starting height ahead of time, as it’s difficult to adjust after installation.

Pros

  • Extraordinary 31.5″ depth measurement ensures plenty of room for your peripherals
  • Comes with a built-in cable management channel and under-desk wire net
  • ANSI and BIFMA certifications guarantee proper stability and support

Cons

  • Adjustment isn’t as easy, smooth, or extensive as adjustable standing desks
  • Outfitted with IKEA’s notorious particleboard desktop material

  • Wide desktop surface and 3-stage frame provide an ergonomic, stable surface for various activities
  • Touch panel comes with arrow keys and four height presets, adjustable down to the centimeter

Check out the Standing Desk from Branch on the manufacturer’s site to see more features.

When it comes to adjustability, the Branch Standing Desk gets nearly everything right. It provides a whopping 27″ of height adjustment and comes in generous 4′ or 5′ desktop variations.

Regarding performance, I love the way Branch’s EasyGlide motor tiptoes into place. You can hardly hear a thing, making it an excellent option for roommate situations or spaces with small children. The tradeoff here is the slow-as-a-snail 0.5″ ips (inches per second) movement. You won’t be adjusting positions as quickly as you otherwise would, but that’s a small tradeoff for calm and tranquility.

Another feature that I appreciate is the desk’s durability. Branch’s 3-stage steel frame offers minimal wobble, and its impact-resistant melamine surface is surprisingly durable. While I personally prefer bamboo, the faux wood surfaces are near identical to the real deal.

Pros

  • EasyGlide motor moves quietly into place
  • Backside brushed metal grommet provides easy cable routing
  • Minimal wobble courtesy of Branch’s sturdy steel frame and impact-resistant melamine

Cons

  • Few style options; only available with a white frame
  • Adjustment mechanism moves at a snail’s pace, roughly 0.5″ per second
